Planning a party in Poway: permits and park rules
A few Poway rules shape what you can put up and where, especially if the party moves from a backyard to a city park.
When a tent needs a fire permit
Poway Fire Department's Fire Prevention Division policy requires an operational permit for a tent larger than 400 sq ft. The policy exempts a single tent open on all sides, or side-by-side tents, totaling 700 sq ft or less. Our 20x40 (800 sq ft) is over that limit, and a 20x30 with sidewalls may need a permit too. A 20x20 is exactly 400 sq ft.

Bounce houses in city parks
The city allows air bounces only by permit in designated areas, including Community Park and Lake Poway, and certain neighborhood parks for Poway residents. The bounce company must bring its own generator, since park outlets are off-limits, and nothing may be staked into the grass.

Park reservations and vehicles
The city asks for 14 days' notice on facility reservations, and liability insurance is required for groups of 50 or more. Vehicles are not allowed to drive on park grass, so plan for carrying gear from the parking lot.
Alcohol and music at park rentals
Alcohol is allowed only at adult functions like weddings and anniversaries, never at youth-oriented rentals, and drinking must stop one hour before the rental ends or at 9:00 p.m., whichever comes first. Groups of 100 or more with alcohol must hire uniformed security.
